DateStamps

Missing or wrong photo dates on iPhone

Find the source of a missing or incorrect photo date before adding a visible stamp.

Start with the original

Open the original in Apple Photos and inspect its information. A screenshot, scan or image saved from a message may not contain the original capture date. A file’s download or modification date is not evidence of when the scene was photographed.

Check shared copies

Sharing services may remove or rewrite metadata. If you still have the original, select that instead. DateStamps reads available EXIF or Photos capture dates; it cannot reconstruct a lost date from the scene.

Review travel time zones

Some older files contain a local time without a time-zone offset. Photos taken near midnight can appear on a different day after import or adjustment. Compare with a reliable travel record before choosing a date; do not guess the missing offset.

Correct one photo, not the whole trip

Tap the date in the editor to set a date for that image. Original date restores its available capture date. If you cannot confirm the date, remove the photo from the batch. A visible stamp records your chosen date; it does not prove it.

An iCloud download error is a different problem

If a photo will not open clearly in Apple Photos, let the original finish downloading and try again. A date correction cannot repair an unavailable original. Keep a separate backup and check new exports before deleting anything.
